Lake Effect warning begins at 8 pm tonight

A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect from 8 pm Tuesday through 7 pm Wednesday in Cayuga and Wayne counties, according to the National Weather Service.Those in the warned counties should expect 7 to 13 inches of snow tonight, another 5 to 10 inches on Wednesday, with minor accumulation taking place Wednesday night. Storm totals for this lake effect event are expect to range from 1 to 2 feet throughout the warned area. The National Weather Service warns that in addition to the lake effect snow, blowing and drifting snow will greatly reduce visibility, which could dip below a quarter mile at times throughout the event. The warning also indicated that roads within the most persistant bands of snow will become impassable with snowfall rates reaching 2 or more inches per hour at times.As always, the National Weather Service points out that preparedness is key for those expecting to travel through the warned area. Conditions can change quickly within a lake effect snow system, and anyone in the warned region should “be prepared for rapid changes in road and visibility.”In addition to the lake effect snow event for those living in Wayne and Cayuga counties, everyone else in the Finger Lakes region should expect a brief shot of wintry weather – as an Arctic front blasts through the area. As the front moves through a shot for moderate to heavy snow will be possible in the Finger Lakes. The area-wide snowfall though will be brief and should only leave accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Winds will also kick up with the passage of this front, but the National Weather Service has yet to issue any watches, advisories or warnings for wind.
